26 MILLION TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN

26 Million Tree Planting Campaign

In conjunction with World Earth Day, Malaysia launched a nationwide campaign to plant 26 million trees by 2014. The figure of 26 million are chosen based on about 26 million people in Malaysia at the moment. With the theme of Green Earth: A Citizen, A Tree.


A total of 16.200 trees have been planted with 500 of them planted on the site launch.


The launch campaign has been executed by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Datuk Seri Douglas Upload Embas in Precinct 5 opposite the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).


In addition in Putrajaya, another tree is planted at the launch site in Alor Setar, Kedah; Kuching, Sarawak; Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Seri Iskandar, Perak; Bachok, Kelantan; Kemaman, Terengganu; Pulau Melaka, Malacca; Seremban, Negeri Sembilan; Kulai , Johor; Items For Sale: Golf Old Town, Penang: Hulu Selangor, Selangor; Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, and Petra Jaya, Sarawak.


During the campaign, Datuk Seri Upload said, "It is estimated area of 38.470 hectares terosot forest, logged forest areas, coastal and urban areas under the trees will be planted by 2014 campaign,"
he said, the campaign was in line at the government's efforts to ensure least 50 percent of the country's area covered by forest areas, in line with Malaysia's commitment at the Rio Conference in 1992.


Currently, he said, the total forested area is 56.4 per cent and if it includes the nation's agricultural crops, it covers 75 percent of the country's land area.
